forcément

necessarily, inevitably

adverb for-seh-MAHN Less Common

Usage Note

Forcément expresses logical inevitability and is very common in spoken French, often used where English might say 'obviously' or 'of course' with mild irony. Pas forcément (not necessarily) is a frequent hedging phrase. It derives from forcer (to force) via forcé (forced, inevitable).

Examples

"Si tu ne dors pas, tu seras forcément fatigué."

Natural Translation

If you don't sleep, you'll inevitably be tired.
