fût

barrel, cask

noun Rare

Also means

shaft, trunk

Usage Note

fût has two main senses: a wooden barrel (for wine or beer) and the shaft of a column or the trunk of a tree. Beer served directly from the barrel is called bière pression or bière au fût. Note the circumflex, which distinguishes it from fut (past historic of être).

"Le vin est vieilli dans des fûts de chêne."

Natural Translation

The wine is aged in oak barrels.
