Fêter specifically means to celebrate an occasion such as a birthday, holiday, or success — fêter un anniversaire, fêter Noël. It derives from fête ('party, festival, holiday'). In French, each day of the year is associated with a saint's name, and fêter son saint means celebrating one's name day.
