Usage Note
Extincteur derives from éteindre ('to extinguish'). It is always masculine. French regulations (Code du travail) require workplaces to have extincteurs at specified intervals and employees may be trained in their use (maniement des extincteurs). The portable red cylinder found on walls is the most common referent.
Examples
"L'extincteur est accroché près de la sortie."
Natural Translation
The fire extinguisher is hung near the exit.
