Usage Note
Escadre denotes a large naval or air-force formation; the smaller unit is an escadrille. It shares a root with escadron (cavalry or armoured squadron), but escadre is reserved for sea or air contexts. The word entered French from Italian squadra (a battalion drawn up in a square).
