Erreur is feminine and is used in the phrase par erreur (by mistake, accidentally). The verb se tromper (to be wrong, to make a mistake) is the natural partner. The phrase faire une erreur or commettre une erreur are both standard ways to say 'to make a mistake', with commettre being more formal.
