Enrôler originally referred to enlisting soldiers (s'enrôler dans l'armée) and retains a military flavour, though it is now used broadly for recruiting members into any organisation. It derives from rôle, in the old sense of a register or roll of names. Related noun: enrôlement (enlistment).
