enfouir

to bury, to hide underground

Usage Note

Enfouir means to bury something deep, often with the connotation of hiding it — enfouir un trésor (to bury a treasure) or enfouir ses sentiments (to bury one's feelings). It is stronger and more deliberate than enterrer. The reflexive s'enfouir means to burrow or nestle deep into something.

Examples

"Il a enfoui le coffret sous les racines."
