to take (a route)

Usage Note

Emprunter covers both borrowing an object (emprunter un livre) and 'taking' a road or route (emprunter l'autoroute). It is not used for borrowing money in banking (use contracter un prêt), though emprunter de l'argent à quelqu'un means 'to borrow money from someone informally'. The related noun emprunt means 'a loan' or a 'borrowing' (in linguistics).
