Usage Note

emplir is a literary or elevated synonym of remplir (to fill); it is rarely used in everyday speech but appears in formal prose and poetry. The reflexive s'emplir (to fill up) is equally literary: ses yeux s'emplirent de larmes (his eyes filled with tears). Learners should default to remplir in most contexts.
