Dépit most commonly appears in the fixed phrase en dépit de ('in spite of, despite'), e.g. en dépit du mauvais temps. As a standalone noun it means wounded pride or frustration: par dépit ('out of spite'). The verb dépiter ('to vex') is rare in modern usage.
