Usage Note
Dieu seeds a flood of everyday exclamations that have lost most of their religious force: mon Dieu for surprise, Dieu merci for relief, and the muttered bon Dieu of exasperation. Capitalized it names the monotheist God, while lowercase un dieu is any deity, plural les dieux.
Examples
"Mon Dieu, quelle surprise !"
Natural Translation
My God, what a surprise!
