Usage Note

Destiner is almost always used in the passive or reflexive: être destiné à (to be meant for) or se destiner à (to aim for a career). Saying ce livre est destiné aux débutants (this book is aimed at beginners) is a very typical construction. The noun destin (fate) shares the root.
