Demi-journée is a compound noun formed from demi ('half') and journée ('day'). It refers to either the morning or afternoon session of a workday. In France, primary school children often have Wednesday mornings off — called la demi-journée du mercredi. The plural is demi-journées. In work contracts, une demi-journée de congé ('half a day's leave') is a standard administrative unit.
