détester

to hate, to detest

verb deh-teh-STEH Common

Usage Note

Détester is a strong but not vulgar verb for hatred and is far more common in everyday French than haïr (to hate), which is irregular and rarer. Like aimer, it is used directly with an infinitive or noun: il déteste attendre (he hates waiting). It is notably used by children and adults alike without sounding extreme.

Examples

"Elle déteste le bruit le matin."

Natural Translation

She hates noise in the morning.
