Usage Note
Détacher means to physically untie or remove something, but reflexively se détacher means to stand out or break free, as in se détacher du groupe (to separate from the group). The past participle détaché is also used in music to indicate staccato playing. The noun le détachement can mean both a detachment of troops and emotional detachment.
