cupide

greedy

adjective ky-PEED Rare

Origin: From Latin 'cupidus' (desirous, eager), related to 'cupiditas' (greed).

Also means

avaricious

Usage Note

Cupide describes excessive desire for wealth or material gain, closer in meaning to 'avaricious' than to the casual English 'greedy'. It is an invariable adjective — the same form is used for both masculine and feminine. The related noun cupidité ('greed, avarice') is the more common form in written French. Not to be confused with Cupidon (Cupid).

Natural Translation

That avaricious businessman shares nothing.
