crier

to shout, to cry out

verb kree-EH Less Common

Usage Note

Crier means to raise one's voice, whether in anger, fear, or excitement; it is not used for weeping (that is pleurer). The expression crier au secours means 'to call for help'. It is a false friend for English 'to cry', which usually means to weep.
