Connaissance can mean knowledge in the abstract (la connaissance du monde) or, in the plural or with an article, a person one knows (une connaissance, an acquaintance). The phrase faire la connaissance de quelqu'un means to meet someone for the first time. It differs from le savoir (theoretical, accumulated knowledge) and le savoir-faire (know-how).
