Congé most commonly appears in congés payés (paid holidays/vacation), a cornerstone of French labour culture established by the 1936 law of the Front populaire (now five weeks per year). Prendre un congé means to take leave. In a formal or professional register, donner congé à quelqu'un means to give someone notice of termination.
