Combat refers to physical fighting, military engagement, or a metaphorical struggle (le combat pour la justice — the fight for justice). The final 't' is silent. The verb combattre means to fight or combat, and combattant is a fighter or combatant. In everyday speech bagarre is more common for a street brawl, while combat carries a more serious tone.
