choir
to fall; to tumble
verb SHWAR Rare
Origin: From Old French cheoir, from Latin cadere (to fall).
Usage Note
Choir is an archaic or literary verb meaning to fall, largely replaced in modern French by tomber. It is now mostly encountered in the expression laisser choir (to let fall, to drop someone), which has a figurative sense of abandoning someone. Its conjugation is irregular and defective — most tenses are not used. The past participle is chu (elle est chue).
Examples
"Il a laissé choir ses illusions."
Natural Translation
He let his illusions fall away.
Literal Translation
He let fall his illusions.
