Chaussure is the standard word for a shoe; the plural chaussures refers to a pair of shoes. The compound chaussure à talon means a high-heeled shoe. The related verb chausser means to put on shoes or to fit (shoe size), as in je chausse du 40 (I take a size 40). Chaussette (sock) and chausson (slipper) share the same root.
