Usage Note

Charité can mean charitable giving as an act, a charitable organisation, or the Christian virtue of caritas. The proverb charité bien ordonnée commence par soi-même ('charity begins at home') is well known. Faire la charité means to give alms or hand out charity, sometimes with a slightly condescending tone.
