Usage Note

Causer has two distinct registers: in standard or written French it means to cause or bring about (a problem, damage), while in familiar, regional speech it simply means to talk or chat. In that 'chatting' sense it now sounds old-fashioned to most speakers, who use parler or discuter instead.
