Usage Note

Catéchisme refers to the religious instruction program of the Catholic Church, widely attended by French children before their first communion; colloquially, aller au caté is the shorthand. By extension it can mean any set of rigidly repeated doctrines. Attendance has declined sharply in France since the 1970s.
