Usage Note
Calèche entered French from German Kalesche (itself from Polish kolaska) in the 17th century. It refers to an open four-wheeled carriage with a folding hood, drawn by horses. Today calèches are mostly found as tourist attractions in historic city centres or as ceremonial vehicles.
