Usage Note

Berger can mean a human shepherd tending flocks or, as a short form of berger allemand, the German shepherd dog breed. The feminine form is bergère, also used for a type of wide armchair. The word gives the pastoral literary genre its name in bergerie (sheepfold; also a pastoral play).
