Usage Note
Athlète is the same form for both genders (un athlète / une athlète); agreement shows only in accompanying adjectives. In French, athlétisme specifically refers to track-and-field athletics, while athlète can describe any competitive sportsperson. The adjective athlétique means 'athletic'.
