Usage Note

Apparent can mean either 'visible/evident' (un défaut apparent = 'an obvious flaw') or 'seeming but not real' (un calme apparent = 'an apparent calm'). The feminine form is apparente. The phrase sans raison apparente ('for no apparent reason') is extremely common in both spoken and written French. The adverb apparemment ('apparently') is derived from it.
