Apeuré describes a state of fear, typically sudden or sustained, and is often used of animals or people caught off guard. The feminine is apeurée. It is similar to effrayé but suggests a more lingering, cowering fear, as in un animal apeuré dans un coin (a frightened animal in a corner).
