août
August
noun OOT Less Common
Origin: From Latin Augustus, named after the emperor Augustus.
Usage Note
août has a notoriously variable pronunciation: the -g- and -û- are both technically silent, and many speakers say simply [ut] or even [u]. It is not capitalised in French. The expression en août ('in August') is used without an article. August is traditionally France's main holiday month — partir en vacances en août is a cultural cliché.
Examples
"Il fait très chaud en août."
Natural Translation
It is very hot in August.
