Usage Note
Amitié is a formal and warm word for friendship, used both in everyday speech (une amitié de longue date, 'a long-standing friendship') and in letter-closing formulas (amitiés, 'warm regards'). The adjective amical means 'friendly'. Unlike ami ('friend'), amitié refers to the bond itself, not the person.
Examples
"Leur amitié dure depuis des années."
Natural Translation
Their friendship has lasted for years.
