allonger

lengthen, extend

verb ah-lohn-ZHEH Less Common

Also means

lie down, stretch out

Usage Note

Allonger has two common uses: making something longer (allonger une jupe — to let down a skirt hem) and laying something flat. The reflexive s'allonger is the natural way to say 'to lie down' or 'to stretch out on a bed'. La sauce est trop épaisse, il faut l'allonger means to thin the sauce by adding liquid.

Examples

"Il s'allonge sur le canapé."

Natural Translation

He lies down on the sofa.

Literal Translation

He himself-lengthens on the sofa
