Éviter means to avoid or steer clear of something. It is a regular -er verb. The construction éviter de + infinitive means 'to avoid doing something' — j'évite de manger du sucre (I avoid eating sugar). It can also mean to spare someone something: ça m'évite des problèmes (it saves me problems).
