Usage Note

Égalité is the 'E' in France's national motto Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. It is also the tennis term for 'deuce' (when the score is tied at 40-40). The adjective égal (equal) and verb égaler (to equal) share the same root. L'égalité des chances means 'equal opportunity'.
