éventuellement

possibly

adverb eh-vahn-tew-EL-mahn Rare

Also means

if need be

Usage Note

Éventuellement is a notorious false friend: it does NOT mean 'eventually' (= finalement or à terme) but rather 'possibly' or 'if the occasion arises'. English speakers frequently misuse it. It comes from éventuel (possible, contingent). Reserve 'eventually' translations for finalement, en fin de compte, or à la longue.

Examples

"Il pourrait éventuellement accepter notre offre."

Natural Translation

He could possibly accept our offer.
