éveiller

to awaken, arouse

verb ay-vay-YAY Less Common

Usage Note

Éveiller often appears reflexively: s'éveiller means 'to wake up' or 'to be awakened' to an idea. It is somewhat more literary than réveiller ('to wake someone up'). Éveiller la curiosité or éveiller les soupçons ('to arouse curiosity/suspicion') are common collocations. The adjective éveillé means 'alert, bright, sharp'.
