Usage Note
Église refers both to a physical church building and to the Church as an institution (l'Église catholique). In France, where Catholicism has deeply shaped culture, l'église du village (the village church) is a central landmark in almost every commune. The word comes via Latin ecclesia from Greek, meaning 'assembly'. Note: une chapelle is a smaller chapel.
