Visite is used for social visits (rendre visite à, to pay a visit to — note this construction takes à, not a direct object), medical consultations (une visite médicale), and tours of a place (une visite guidée, a guided tour). The verb is visiter for places, but rendre visite à for people — using visiter for a person sounds clinical or foreign.
