Usage Note

Violoncelle is the standard French word for the cello. The player is a violoncelliste. Unlike the violin (violon) or viola (alto), the violoncelle is played while seated with the instrument resting on a pique (end-pin) on the floor. Its rich, low register makes it a favourite for solo repertoire.
