vestige

vestige

noun ves-TEEZH Rare

Also means

remnant

Usage Note

Vestige most often appears in the plural vestiges to describe physical remains of the past — ruins, archaeological traces — though it can also be used figuratively for surviving traces of a custom or idea. A common collocation is les vestiges de l'Antiquité ('the remains of Antiquity'). It does not carry the English sense of 'a very small amount'.

Examples
