Vernis is always spelt with a final -s, even in the singular. It covers nail polish (vernis à ongles), wood varnish, and figuratively a thin surface veneer of culture or politeness (un vernis de politesse). The verb vernir or vernisser means 'to varnish', and a vernissage is the private opening of an art exhibition.
