Usage Note

Velours has a silent final -s and is always singular when referring to the fabric. The expression patte de velours (velvet paw) describes someone who hides their claws — used of a person who appears gentle but is actually tough. Voix de velours (velvet voice) compliments a smooth, rich vocal tone.
