traquenard

trap, snare

noun trak-NAR Rare

Usage Note

Traquenard originally referred to a type of ambling trot used to tire out a horse, but today it almost exclusively means a trap or ambush set for a person. The expression tomber dans un traquenard means to fall into a trap. It is more vivid and literary than the neutral piège.
