Usage Note
Tonne is the metric ton (1,000 kg), distinct from the British imperial ton. In informal French, des tonnes de is a hyperbolic expression meaning 'loads of' or 'tons of' (j'ai des tonnes de travail = 'I have loads of work'). The final e is silent and the word is always feminine.
