supposer

to suppose, to assume

verb sü-poh-ZEH Less Common

Usage Note

Supposer introduces an assumption or hypothesis, often in the phrase je suppose que ('I suppose / I assume that'). In the passive construction être supposé faire quelque chose, it means 'to be supposed to do something', directly parallel to the English structure. It is milder than présumer and more tentative than penser.

Examples

"Je suppose qu'il est encore au bureau."

Natural Translation

I suppose he is still at the office.
