Sondage covers opinion polls, surveys, and geological probes (drilling). In journalism, un sondage d'opinion is an opinion poll; selon un sondage ('according to a poll') is a very common phrase. The verb sonder means both 'to poll' and 'to probe/sound out'. Sonder l'opinion is a common collocation.
