sirocco

noun see-ROH-koh Rare

Origin: From Arabic sharq, meaning 'east'.

Usage Note

Sirocco (also spelled siroco) is a hot, dry, dust-laden wind that originates in the Sahara and blows northward across the Mediterranean into southern Europe. In French-speaking North Africa the wind can bring extreme heat and reduce visibility significantly. The word entered French via Italian scirocco. It is occasionally used figuratively to describe any oppressively hot, stifling atmosphere.
