Usage Note

Sérieux describes a person who is earnest and reliable, or a situation that is grave. The feminine form is sérieuse. The expression prendre au sérieux means to take seriously, and sans rire or sérieusement are common adverbial extensions. It can also mean 'considerable' — un sérieux problème is a serious/major problem.
